My first assignment in Central Asia was in Kyrgyzstan in 2000. Via a series of twelve support missions I assisted farmers in the region of Osh to set up an innovative and strong seed potato cooperative. I was a real pleasure to see how much social capital was available in the comunities to do so. Since 2007 I completed some fifteen mission in Afghanistan. The assignments range from organisation- and strategy development, via value chain analyses and market surveys to research and evaluations. Although social capital seems to be in short supply in Afghanistan, at local level progress can be made with carefully designed interventions.
